Union, N.J. (8/31/18) – The Kean University women's soccer team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and didn't look back in a 5-1 season opening win in the Cougar Classic against the College of Staten Island on Friday evening.
Senior Cori Dengel led the way with two goals and an assist for Kean (1-0). Samantha LaValle broke up the shutout for the Dolphins (0-1).
Lexy Monroy got the scoring started with her first of the night. Dengel fired a shot that was saved but not held by the Dolphins and Monroy finished it off for a quick 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes later it was Dengel's turn as Brittany Birth sent a cross into the box that was deflected by the keeper straight to Dengel who finished the open net opportunity.
Birth made it 3-0 12 minutes into the second half as Marlee Franden hit the left post. Birth collected the rebound for her first goal of the season. Monroy and Birth connected in the 78th minute for a 4-0 lead.
CSI erased the shutout with 8:12 to go as LaValle took advantage of a missed clear.
Dengel closed out the night with a penalty kick goal for the final.
Mary Bystrycki earned the win in net. She saved five shots in 76 minutes of action for Kean. Kaila DiBenedetto collected 11 saves in the loss for CSI.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday when they face the University of Scranton at 4 p.m.
